Els tancaments de museus imposats per la COVID-19 han precipitat una caiguda dr\u00e0stica del nombre d&#8217;espectadors i dels ingressos associats. Les restriccions als viatges internacionals que prohibeixen l&#8217;acc\u00e9s als llocs tur\u00edstics m\u00e9s populars han afectat amb especial duresa els grans museus nacionals, incloent-hi la Tate Modern. Fins i tot quan l&#8217;edifici es va obrir, les multituds d&#8217;estiuejants, les fam\u00edlies i els escolars que abans abarrotaven la cavernosa Sala de Turbines i els espais de les galeries han estat notablement absents. Aleshores, per qu\u00e8 serveix un museu d&#8217;art nacional com la Tate Modern, si no \u00e9s per oferir educaci\u00f3 i entreteniment a un nombre cada vegada m\u00e9s gran de visitants de tot el m\u00f3n? I pot sobreviure financerament si el model de l&#8217;exposici\u00f3 que atrau visitants massius ja no \u00e9s viable?<\/p>\n<p>Igualment impactant ha estat la resposta a l&#8217;assassinat de George Floyd el maig del 2020 per part dels museus d&#8217;art nacionals. El moviment Black Lives Matter fa temps que crida l&#8217;atenci\u00f3 sobre el paper del patrimoni en la perpetuaci\u00f3 del racisme; no obstant aix\u00f2, des de l&#8217;any passat amb la creixent indignaci\u00f3 p\u00fablica, va augmentar la pressi\u00f3 sobre galeries, biblioteques, arxius i museus perqu\u00e8 abordessin el racisme dins i fora de les seves organitzacions i es comprometessin a descolonitzar-ne les pr\u00e0ctiques i col\u00b7leccions. Tot i que moltes institucions culturals el 2020 van respondre fent declaracions p\u00fabliques en qu\u00e8 es comprometien a la igualtat racial i a fer front a les desigualtats interseccionals sist\u00e8miques, la realitat \u00e9s que assolir aquestes ambicions requereix una important transformaci\u00f3 institucional. Per anar m\u00e9s enll\u00e0 de la senyalitzaci\u00f3 performativa de virtuts i avan\u00e7ar cap a una aut\u00e8ntica descolonitzaci\u00f3 i equitat d&#8217;acc\u00e9s, els museus han de desconstruir i canviar qu\u00e8 i com col\u00b7leccionen, exposen, conserven, arxiven, interpreten i ensenyen les col\u00b7leccions. \u00c9s factible aquesta transformaci\u00f3? Tot i aix\u00f2, es podria dir que la crisi actual cont\u00e9 la possibilitat d&#8217;una reinvenci\u00f3 positiva. Imaginem per un moment un escenari en qu\u00e8, per exemple, els museus nacionals aprofitaran aquesta oportunitat per repensar fonamentalment com valoren i fan visible el coneixement creat pels professionals que hi treballen i l&#8217;experi\u00e8ncia dels qui s&#8217;hi relacionen. Pensem en la possibilitat que aquests museus reavalu\u00efn la seva funci\u00f3, de manera que segueixin sent els conservadors, en el sentit de ser els cuidadors de les col\u00b7leccions, sense ser-ne les autoritats exclusives. Qu\u00e8 passaria si aquests museus destinessin importants recursos a treballar en estreta col\u00b7laboraci\u00f3 amb l&#8217;exterior per co-crear noves configuracions i interpretacions dels objectes i les obres d&#8217;art del museu? Pensaran sens dubte que aquests no s\u00f3n conceptes nous. L&#8217;argument que els museus haurien de funcionar m\u00e9s com a f\u00f2rums de debat i de lliure intercanvi d&#8217;idees que com a temples elitistes d&#8217;enrarit coneixement, s&#8217;ha plantejat diverses vegades des de finals de la d\u00e8cada dels \u00a060. Per\u00f2 potser el que fa que aquest moment sigui \u00fanic , \u00e9s la combinaci\u00f3 de l&#8217;aguda inestabilitat financera amb la cr\u00edtica sostinguda de les fallades de representaci\u00f3 i el racisme sist\u00e8mic d&#8217;aquestes institucions: dos escenaris que podrien permetre un replantejament existencial i epistemol\u00f2gic.<\/p>\n<p>La investigaci\u00f3 com a manera de generar coneixement exerceix un paper important en el suport a aquesta transformaci\u00f3. No obstant aix\u00f2, per aconseguir-ho, cal reformular com s&#8217;ent\u00e9n el funcionament de la investigaci\u00f3 dins del mateix museu. Cal recon\u00e8ixer la interconnectivitat entre la pr\u00e0ctica, la teoria i la investigaci\u00f3; les formes de praxi que existeixen no nom\u00e9s als departaments de conservaci\u00f3, sin\u00f3 tamb\u00e9 als programes i activitats pedag\u00f2giques, a les divisions de conservaci\u00f3 i als equips d&#8217;experi\u00e8ncia dels visitants. A m\u00e9s, la investigaci\u00f3 duta a terme al museu no ha de transcendir el regne d&#8217;una selecta minoria d&#8217;acad\u00e8mics. \u00c9s a dir, hem de destacar com la investigaci\u00f3 en qu\u00e8 participen professionals i col\u00b7laboradors de fora de la instituci\u00f3 pot funcionar de manera m\u00e9s democr\u00e0tica i disruptiva. En ess\u00e8ncia, la investigaci\u00f3 \u00e9s un proc\u00e9s d&#8217;indagaci\u00f3 estructurat i basat en una pregunta (o preguntes) que genera coneixements nous que es comparteixen p\u00fablicament. En altres paraules, la investigaci\u00f3 \u00e9s una activitat que requereix q\u00fcestionament, comprom\u00eds cr\u00edtic, reflexi\u00f3 i creaci\u00f3 de coneixement. Entesa en aquests termes, la investigaci\u00f3 pot oferir un espai epistemol\u00f2gic dins del museu per interrogar els sistemes i les estructures existents, treure a la llum narratives pr\u00e8viament ocultes per\u00f2 vitals de les nostres hist\u00f2ries i centrar interpretacions m\u00e9s diverses<strong>. Vist aix\u00ed, la investigaci\u00f3 t\u00e9 el potencial de ser un agent d\u201finterrupci\u00f3 i canvi productiu.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ja existeixen models de com la investigaci\u00f3 duta a terme per professionals dels museus en col\u00b7laboraci\u00f3 amb col\u00b7legues universitaris i amb individus i grups, pot posar de manifest les pr\u00e0ctiques muse\u00edstiques excloents i realitzar intervencions positives a les institucions culturals. Aquests professionals-investigadors dels museus volen veure el canvi, igual que molts altres que conec i que es dediquen a la investigaci\u00f3 col\u00b7laborativa participativa per tal d&#8217;examinar i q\u00fcestionar les pr\u00f2pies institucions. Sovint basats en equips d&#8217;educaci\u00f3 o divulgaci\u00f3, aquests individus s\u00f3n conscients de la necessitat que veus m\u00faltiples i diversitat de coneixements i experi\u00e8ncies donin forma al museu. Intenten establir associacions de recerca equitatives que respectin les contribucions de tots els participants i que aprenguin dels coneixements obtinguts mitjan\u00e7ant un proc\u00e9s de recerca en col\u00b7laboraci\u00f3. Amb massa freq\u00fc\u00e8ncia, per\u00f2, aquestes persones i els projectes que promouen operen al marge del museu, i les intervencions de recerca estan limitades en temps i recursos. El clima actual, en qu\u00e8 l&#8217;exist\u00e8ncia dels museus tal com els coneixem \u00e9s incerta, \u00e9s sovint dif\u00edcil i esgotador per als qui hi treballen. Per\u00f2 per a alguns, la comprensi\u00f3 que no podem continuar operant de la mateixa manera, mantenint pr\u00e0ctiques excloents que ja no s\u00f3n viables ni \u00e8ticament ni econ\u00f2micament, \u00e9s alliberadora. Incorporar la participaci\u00f3 basada en la recerca i la col\u00b7laboraci\u00f3 genu\u00efna al cor de la pr\u00e0ctica muse\u00edstica \u00e9s un dels diversos enfocaments que un museu nacional podria adoptar per aconseguir una veritable equitat d&#8217;acc\u00e9s i representaci\u00f3.
