L&#8217;exposici\u00f3 intenta tra\u00e7ar l\u00ednies paral\u00b7leles amb el desenvolupament de les avantguardes a Occident, incloent fites de l&#8217;art i la gr\u00e0fica japonesos del segle XX. Vol oferir al visitant una generosa panor\u00e0mica de com la pl\u00e0stica es va fer ress\u00f2 del ren\u00e9ixer que va experimentar el pa\u00eds asi\u00e0tic despr\u00e9s del cop d&#8217;Hiroshima. No obstant aix\u00f2, coixeja en dos punts: En primer lloc, s&#8217;utilitzen els desenvolupaments europeus i nord-americans com a refer\u00e8ncia per a mesurar dins l&#8217;evoluci\u00f3 de la pl\u00e0stica japonesa els canvis que va patir el pa\u00eds, fomentant sense censura una lectura euro-c\u00e8ntrica de la modernitat nipona que una no esperaria d&#8217;una instituci\u00f3 com el MoMA en aquestes al\u00e7ades. A m\u00e9s, la sobrec\u00e0rrega d&#8217;obres d&#8217;artistes, escoles, i d\u00e8cades dispars a les tres sales que ocupa no permet ni tan sols donar-li una oportunitat a la intenci\u00f3 dels comissaris. Hi ha peces de creadors tan diferents entre s\u00ed com el Grup Ongaku, l&#8217;il\u00b7lustrador Awazu Kiyoshi o l&#8217;arquitecte Isozaki Arata. No s\u2019aconsegueix transmetre com, despr\u00e9s de la Segona Guerra Mundial, T\u00f2quio creix com a capital cultural del Pac\u00edfic nord, fins esdevenir el centre de refer\u00e8ncia que \u00e9s avui. Per contra, s&#8217;ofereixen les obres al p\u00fablic com si fossin versions en japon\u00e8s de fites occidentals amb les que aquest p\u00fablic ja est\u00e0 familiaritzat.<\/p>\n<p>Per\u00f2 despr\u00e9s de sortir de la sala, amb l&#8217;amarg temor de que el MoMA no pogu\u00e9s presentar de millor manera la transformaci\u00f3 del Jap\u00f3 al llarg del XX, una baixa a la segona planta i es calma. Amagat darrere de les sales d&#8217;una altra exposici\u00f3 es troba l&#8217;espai que la instituci\u00f3 ha reservat per al treball de <a href=\"http:\/\/www.moma.org\/visit\/calendar\/exhibitions\/1341\">Meiro Koizumi<\/a>, (Gunma, Jap\u00f3, 1976), l&#8217;artista que ocupa fins al 6 de maig la programaci\u00f3 de la <em>Project Series<\/em> del museu. A la primera meitat d&#8217;aquest espai, en dues pantalles enfrontades, es veuen els v\u00eddeos <em>Human Opera XXX<\/em> (2007) i <em>My Voice Would Reach You<\/em> (2009). La primera, gravada en el seu estudi d&#8217;Amsterdam, ens mostra un home explicant la seva hist\u00f2ria personal de p\u00e8rdues; assegut, compungit, a les fosques, en un banc. L&#8217;artista maquillat interromp el seu relat cada vegada que aquest anomena un nou personatge de la trag\u00e8dia. La segona obra, realitzada al Jap\u00f3, presenta un home trencat per la p\u00e8rdua de la seva mare. El protagonista parla amb operadors de l\u00ednies d&#8217;atenci\u00f3 al client, dialogant amb ells com si fossin ella, i donant lloc a converses dislocades en qu\u00e8 cap de les parts pot penjar. Amb aquest treball l&#8217;artista tensa la caracter\u00edstica cordialitat japonesa confrontant-la amb el drama de la solitud de l&#8217;urbanita. Per \u00faltim, creuant la porta al final d&#8217;aquesta sala s&#8217;entra a la v\u00eddeo-instal\u00b7laci\u00f3 <em>Defect in Vision<\/em> (2011), un treball sobre la ceguera i la hist\u00f2ria. Una parella de mitjana edat conversa sobre la guerra. El marit, pilot kamikaze, abandona el menjador per anar a treballar. L&#8217;esposa, que no vol veure qu\u00e8 passa, segueix parlant en plural i en futur. El di\u00e0leg es repeteix diverses vegades, amb lleugeres variacions, sobre plans diferents de la mateixa situaci\u00f3. La pantalla penja al centre de la sala. De l&#8217;altre costat hi ha una altra pantalla on es veu a la dona re-actuant sola parts de la primera escena. Per ambd\u00f3s personatges, l&#8217;artista va contractar actors invidents.<\/p>\n<p>El cineasta Yasuzo Masumura explicava el sentit d\u2019all\u00f2 sentimental en el cinema cl\u00e0ssic japon\u00e8s com una barreja de contenci\u00f3, harmonia, resignaci\u00f3, pena, derrota i escapament. Ho contraposava a un sentimentalisme cl\u00e0ssic propi del melodrama de Hollywood, marcat pels conflictes, la lluita, el plaer i la recerca de la vict\u00f2ria.
