Sobre &#8220;Searching for Sugar Man&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>L&#8217;actual auge del g\u00e8nere documental s&#8217;ha d&#8217;observar detingudament des de tres esferes de producci\u00f3 de visualitat: la televisi\u00f3, el cinema i l&#8217;art. Cadascuna d&#8217;aquestes esferes genera els seus particulars productes dins dels seus territoris acotats, mentre que la interrelaci\u00f3 i la flu\u00efdesa del g\u00e8nere traspassa sovint fronteres de l&#8217;un a l\u2019altre.<\/p>\n<p>El documental ha esdevingut el g\u00e8nere art\u00edstic que millor reprodueix les contradiccions de la representaci\u00f3 en el postmodernisme tard\u00e0. La seva bonan\u00e7a t\u00e9 alguna cosa de relativa a una \u00e8poca, com si el seu ascens signifiqu\u00e9s una necessitat sist\u00e8mica encara indiscernible.<\/p>\n<p>El meu inter\u00e8s pel material audiovisual excitant em va dur a una sala de cinema a veure <em>Searching for Sugar Man<\/em>, de Malik Bendjelloul, que a sobre va resultar guanyadora de l&#8217;\u00d2scar al millor documental. Anar a veure una pel\u00b7l\u00edcula un dia abans de la gala de Hollywood sense saber que est\u00e0 nominada sembla tota una garantia d&#8217;objectivitat cr\u00edtica. <\/p>\n<p>En primer lloc, sorpresa en veure que la petita sala estava bastant plena de p\u00fablic. Tot seguit comen\u00e7a la projecci\u00f3, i des dels primers compassos, alguna cosa no funciona. <em>Searching for Sugar Man<\/em> narra la figura de Rodr\u00edguez, o Sixto Rodr\u00edguez, un cantautor que al comen\u00e7ament dels seixanta va poder ser m\u00e9s gran que Bob Dylan o fins i tot assolir l&#8217;estatus dels Rolling Stones. Per\u00f2 no va ser aix\u00ed. No obstant, i per causes misterioses no del tot clares, Rodr\u00edguez va aconseguir un enorme \u00e8xit a Sud\u00e0frica, convertint-se en tot un s\u00edmbol per als <em>afrikaners<\/em>. Rodr\u00edguez mai s&#8217;assabent\u00e0 del seu gran \u00e8xit en aquest pa\u00eds, i despr\u00e9s del frac\u00e0s estrepit\u00f3s del seu primer \u00e0lbum als Estats Units, va tornar al seu treball de paleta, amb el misticisme i l&#8217;austeritat d&#8217;un poeta de carrer. La hist\u00f2ria incre\u00efble per\u00f2 certa de Rodr\u00edguez \u00e9s real, i captura al p\u00fablic per la seva humanitat i carisma.<\/p>\n<p>La forma conscientment emprada pel director sembla ser la d&#8217;un fals documental. A mesura que avan\u00e7a s\u2019esdev\u00e9 m\u00e9s en un <em>rockumentary<\/em>. I aqu\u00ed comencen els problemes: hi ha un llenguatge f\u00edlmic tan elaborat; una producci\u00f3 tan estetitzada; i una ambici\u00f3 comercial tan desmesurada, que la possible hist\u00f2ria de Rodr\u00edguez acaba consumida i reintegrada al carro del <em>mainstream<\/em> revisionista. Grans panor\u00e0miques a\u00e8ries de ciutats; postes de sol; animacions digitals, i la deshonesta mania de llevar-li el color a una imatge digital, s\u00f3n nom\u00e9s alguns dels pecats que denoten l&#8217;\u00e0nsia per colonitzar el cervell i el cor dels espectadors. Aquesta producci\u00f3 arru\u00efna el que d&#8217;altra banda sembla un argument amb possibilitats.<\/p>\n<p>Mentre la irritaci\u00f3 de qui aix\u00f2 escriu va <em>in crescendo<\/em>, la sala s&#8217;abandona a les can\u00e7ons i l\u2019esteticisme dominant. No existeix en aquesta pel\u00b7l\u00edcula cap element no guionitzat capa\u00e7 d\u2019obrir una escletxa per on pogu\u00e9s escolar-se un bri d&#8217;aire fresc. Mentre que l&#8217;entusiasme dels &#8220;investigadors&#8221; i els fans sud-africans sembla extret d&#8217;un <em>c\u00e0sting<\/em>, la figura de Rodr\u00edguez sucumbeix a la major de les manipulacions. Nom\u00e9s el material d&#8217;arxiu d&#8217;una gira de concerts del cantautor al pa\u00eds afric\u00e0 a finals dels noranta aconsegueix trencar el tractament maniqueu i emmascarador.<\/p>\n<p>La primera part semblaria oferir pistes per a una indagaci\u00f3 pr\u00f2pia de Sherlock Holmes. Qui \u00e9s Rodr\u00edguez? Realment, tal com diu la llegenda sud-africana, es va su\u00efcidar en un concert cremant-se a l&#8217;estil bonze? O es va volar el cap en directe? Aquesta \u00e9s la part m\u00e9s adequada per al mapatge cognitiu propi del g\u00e8nere documental. Es demostra aleshores que els g\u00e8neres sols estan al servei dels directors, i que \u00e9s el talent d&#8217;aquests i dels seus guionistes el que pot insuflar de vida una narraci\u00f3, tant en la no-ficci\u00f3 com en la ficci\u00f3. (Em ve al cap <em>Zodiac<\/em>, 2007, de David Fincher, tot un cas de complexitat al voltant de la identitat d&#8217;un personatge real, per\u00f2 amb un tractament de ficci\u00f3).<\/p>\n<p>Per\u00f2 m\u00e9s enll\u00e0 de les formes, a <em>Searching for Sugar Man<\/em> s&#8217;hi troba tot un s\u00edmptoma propi d&#8217;una contemporane\u00eftat com la nostra, que no es cansa de descobrir i redescobrir aquells cap\u00edtols oblidats d&#8217;una Hist\u00f2ria <em>altra<\/em>: la troballa d&#8217;alg\u00fa que va poder regnar per\u00f2 que va escollir la via equivocada. Avui dia, aquest historicisme cultural funciona com a estrat\u00e8gia per fer consumible qualsevol cosa que encara no hagi estat explotada. Hordes de guionistes professionals i amateurs arreu del m\u00f3n treballen sense descans per trobar aquella hist\u00f2ria no del tot reconeguda per les masses. Podria ser un m\u00fasic, un artista o qualsevol episodi del passat que torna. Tant se val. La mateixa nit despr\u00e9s de veure <em>Searching for Sugar Man<\/em> vaig saber que estava nominada als \u00d2scar, i tot seguit vaig intuir l&#8217;imminent resultat.
