Una de les meves companyes li posa davant de la cara al taxista un petit mapa, d&#8217;aquests de disseny m\u00ednim i buf\u00f3 que reparteixen a les biennals, i li demana que ens porti all\u00ed, a la &#8220;Sharjah Biennial \u00c0rea&#8221;.  El senyor mira primer el mapa i despr\u00e9s a la meva companya, tal i com Elliot va mirar ET, i li fa un gest amb les espatlles que tant aviat podria voler dir &#8220;no s\u00e9 on \u00e9s&#8221; com &#8220;l&#8217;hummus no se m\u2019ha posat b\u00e9&#8221;.  Li pregunta &#8220;next to what?&#8221;, i ara \u00e9s la meva companya la que mira al taxista com si no fos d&#8217;aquest m\u00f3n. &#8220;I don\u2019t know. YOU should know! &#8220;Li diu. \u00c9s la tercera vegada que estem en aquesta situaci\u00f3 des que vam arribar als Emirats. \u00c9s la tercera vegada que agafem un taxi.<\/p>\n<p>Aquesta an\u00e8cdota no vindria al cas si no fos perqu\u00e8 la biennal de Sharjah es diu, precisament, \u201cRe: emerge. Towards a new cultural Cartography\u201d (Re-emergir. Cap a una nova cartografia cultural) i ens parla, amb contund\u00e8ncia conceptual; est\u00e8tica i post-colonial, de la necessitat que nosaltres, els &#8220;occidentals&#8221; blancs i racionals, deixem de considerar-nos el melic de l&#8217;univers. Les l\u00ednies marcades per la biennal segueixen rutes diferents de les que uneixen Europa amb un altre lloc (aquest &#8220;altre lloc&#8221; informe; ex\u00f2tic; lluny\u00e0;  amb recursos naturals inexhauribles, vegetaci\u00f3 en abund\u00e0ncia i molts mosquits). Per exemple, ens revela la posici\u00f3 estrat\u00e8gica de la pen\u00ednsula ar\u00e0biga entre \u00c0frica i \u00c0sia, enmig d\u2019una ruta de comer\u00e7 antiqu\u00edssima que produeix intercanvis culturals completament aliens al nostre coneixement. I aixecant la vista cap a la marr\u00f3 ciutat de Sharjah, on el 70% de la poblaci\u00f3 s\u00f3n homes; i m\u00e9s de la meitat d&#8217;ells, emigrants d&#8217;altres pa\u00efsos dels ve\u00efns continents; amb el mar a un costat i el desert a l&#8217;altre, per fi t&#8217;adones que \u00e9s cert: que per a la gent amb la que ens creuem, el centre del seu m\u00f3n \u00e9s aix\u00f2, i si no aquest, un altre encara m\u00e9s allunyat del nostre.<\/p>\n<p>Tornem al taxi, que aconsegueix portar-nos al museu. All\u00e0, una primera pe\u00e7a de Sa\u00e2dane Afif: una cadira feta d\u2019arish, un teixit de palma tradicional d&#8217;Ar\u00e0bia, i la transcripci\u00f3 de l&#8217;entrevista de l&#8217;artista amb l&#8217;artes\u00e0, en la qual anem llegint que aquest \u00faltim no sap (ni li importa) de quina \u00e8poca s\u00f3n els dissenys, i de fet els canvia depenent dels gustos dels turistes. La que est\u00e0 exposada aqu\u00ed segueix un model d&#8217;Enzo Mari de 1974, que li va donar Afif, i n\u2019hi ha altres trenta a les sales d&#8217;exposicions. Sales d&#8217;exposicions situades en edificis r\u00fastics amb patis interiors, a la &#8220;zona de patrimoni&#8221; en vies de construcci\u00f3. Com que l&#8217;arquitectura als Emirats sempre ha estat ef\u00edmera i per tant, no hi ha edificis antics, les grans ciutats construeixen ara suposats centres hist\u00f2rics, passats contemporanis ideals i idealitzats, que es completen meravellosament amb la tradici\u00f3 \u201cenzomariana\u201d d\u2019arish.<\/p>\n<p>Aix\u00f2 que alguns considerarien simp\u00e0tiques historietes s\u00f3n en realitat les dues primeres puntades a la boca per a l&#8217;orgull universalista occidental. En primer lloc, perqu\u00e8 la gent, als Emirats \u00c0rabs (i probablement al Pakistan, d&#8217;on eren molts dels taxistes), no t\u00e9 una concepci\u00f3 de l&#8217;espai abstracta i representada en una combinaci\u00f3 bidimensional a escala matem\u00e0tica. Miren el mapa i veuen el que veiem nosaltres en mirar les inscripcions a les mesquites: uns dissenys molt bonics. Ells s&#8217;orienten amb refer\u00e8ncies f\u00edsiques; dist\u00e0ncies entre llocs coneguts o emblem\u00e0tics; amb una intu\u00efci\u00f3 absolutament diferent de la ciutat. I en segon lloc, no tenen un concepte de passat i present similar al nostre. No \u00e9s un problema que la zona hist\u00f2rica es constru\u00eds ahir; de fet, a la Meca s&#8217;estan dedicant a destruir els edificis de l&#8217;\u00e8poca de Mahoma perqu\u00e8 la gent no els idolatri. Igual que al Jap\u00f3 el santuari d&#8217;Ise, el m\u00e9s important de la religi\u00f3 shinto, es destrueix i reconstrueix en un lloc adjacent cada vint anys per renovar la seva naturalesa.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignleft size-full wp-image-7615\" src=\"http:\/\/a-desk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Tintin_Wulia.jpg\" alt=\"b) Tintin Wulia: \"Terra Incognita, et cetera\"\" align=\"left\" width=\"670\" height=\"503\" srcset=\"https:\/\/a-desk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Tintin_Wulia.jpg 670w, https:\/\/a-desk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Tintin_Wulia-533x400.jpg 533w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 670px) 100vw, 670px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>S\u00f3n moltes les bases suposadament naturals i racionals del nostre pensament que es posen en q\u00fcesti\u00f3 a Sharjah, a trav\u00e9s de la ciutat i de les obres d&#8217;art. Tamb\u00e9 la pr\u00f2pia idea dels valors art\u00edstics. Si la concepci\u00f3 del passat \u00e9s ja tan diferent, no ho seran de la mateixa manera les refer\u00e8ncies filos\u00f2fiques; les obres art\u00edstiques; les maneres de jugar amb els formats; les t\u00e8cniques; els conceptes? En un primer moment costa, per exemple, respondre a les obres de Mohamed Ali Fadlabi, qui pren com a punt de partida la pintura eclesi\u00e0stica d&#8217;Eti\u00f2pia per mesclar-la amb refer\u00e8ncies de superherois; retro-futurisme, i la m\u00fasica i est\u00e8tica de Sun-ra, entre d&#8217;altres. Ens sentim completament alienats davant l&#8217;obra cal\u00b7ligr\u00e0fica de Mouneer Alshaarani, nosaltres que comprenem instant\u00e0niament a Jenny Holzer. I potser la nostra primera tend\u00e8ncia \u00e9s menysprear, com es menysprea el que no encaixa en els nostres esquemes, com defensa per no recon\u00e8ixer la nostra ignor\u00e0ncia.<\/p>\n<p>Per\u00f2 una selecci\u00f3 d&#8217;obres magn\u00edfiques (impossible fer just\u00edcia en un article tan curt: lectora, lector, passa&#8217;t per la p\u00e0gina web de la Sharjah Foundation i pren-te el teu temps) i la sensaci\u00f3 de navegar per un espai on les refer\u00e8ncies s\u00f3n altres, acaben per fer-nos comprendre que el t\u00edtol, amb el seu \u201ctowards\u201d, com si s\u2019emprengu\u00e9s el viatge ara, es dirigeix a nosaltres: al nostre m\u00f3n d&#8217;art de Documenta, Manifesta, Londres i Nova York; a nosaltres, hereus de Colom, que estem descobrint que existeixen altres formes de representar l&#8217;espai vital.
