Per recon\u00e8ixer la seva gran (plus)v\u00e0lua liter\u00e0ria com a escriptora, seria recomanable llegir immediatament despr\u00e9s d&#8217;una de les seves obres, un llibre d&#8217;un autor contemporani destacat. La difer\u00e8ncia qualitativa \u00e9s insuportable. Comissariada per la bi\u00f2grafa Frances Spalding, l&#8217;exposici\u00f3 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npg.org.uk\/whatson\/virginiawoolf\/home.php\">Virginia Woolf: Art, Life and Vision<\/a> que presenta la National Portrait Gallery de Londres fins al 26 d&#8217;octubre, emfatitza la biografia il\u00b7lustrada d&#8217;una de les autores brit\u00e0niques m\u00e9s llorejades de la hist\u00f2ria. Aquesta combinaci\u00f3 d&#8217;imatge i biografia explora diferents aspectes de la seva personalitat. Com en qualsevol persona, dins de Virginia Woolf, aquella dona d&#8217;aspecte malenconi\u00f3s i let\u00e0rgic tamb\u00e9 hi havia multituds. <\/p>\n<p>Estructurada en cinc blocs -i encapsulada en el que s&#8217;assembla bastant a un breu passad\u00eds zigzaguejant enva\u00eft per un batall\u00f3 de curiosos octogenaris- l&#8217;exposici\u00f3 respon al patr\u00f3 cronol\u00f2gic de la seva vida i de la gent amb la qual es va relacionar. Tot i que la intenci\u00f3 primig\u00e8nia era remarcar la import\u00e0ncia d&#8217;aquesta novel\u00b7lista, periodista, cr\u00edtica, intel\u00b7lectual, assagista, lectora i editora, la mostra (amb \u00e8mfasi en els retrats) embasta -a estones amb vigor i de vegades amb vaguetat- la seva vida i els seus \u00e8xits, a m\u00e9s del rosari d&#8217;amics, parents llunyans, rivals o aliats. No obstant aix\u00f2, queden plasmats els seus interessos i ambicions creatives en una exhibici\u00f3 caracteritzada per una narrativa visual que connecta imatges, objectes i idees; aborda la seva faceta feminista, antimilitarista i antiimperialista, la seva fascinaci\u00f3 per Londres i la seva consci\u00e8ncia de modernitat, sense ignorar la vulnerabilitat de la seva salut mental: la seva vida -m\u00e9s que afectada- va estar sempre subratllada per la inestabilitat mental. <\/p>\n<p>Aquells que van participar en les reunions setmanals (anomenades despectivament Bloomsberries pel seu tarann\u00e0 exclusiu i esnob) que organitzaven a la seva casa de Bloomsbury tamb\u00e9 estan representats a la NPG. S&#8217;accentua la influ\u00e8ncia d&#8217;amics com Roger Fray (de qui va heretar la seva admiraci\u00f3 per C\u00e9zanne i l&#8217;anhel imperi\u00f3s de convertir la seva literatura en pintura postimpressionista), Lytton Strachey, John M. Keynes, Duncan Grant. No obstant aix\u00f2, se\u2019n silencia d\u2019altres del grup com E.M. Forster o Bertrand Russell. A la seva vida tamb\u00e9 hi van ocupar un lloc destacat Violet Dickinson, que la va recolzar en les seves primeres crisis nervioses i la va motivar per iniciar la seva carrera liter\u00e0ria; Vita-Sackville-West, a qui va dedicar Orlando i amb qui va iniciar un roman\u00e7; o Katherine Mansfield, amb la qual va mantenir una ambigua relaci\u00f3 de t\u00e8rbola amistat, fonamentada en malentesos i gelosia. <\/p>\n<p>Componen l&#8217;exposici\u00f3 m\u00e9s de 140 objectes, aix\u00ed com fotografies (de la seva tia-\u00e0via Julie Margaret Cameron, Beresford, Gis\u00e8le Freund o Man Ray) i quadres del seu ampli cercle d&#8217;amistats (pintats per la seva germana Vanessa Bell, Duncan Grant o Roger Fry), fragments dels seus diaris, il\u00b7lustracions de Vanessa Bell per als seus llibres, o exemplars originals impresos per ella mateixa i el seu marit Leonard Woolf a Hogarth Press, l&#8217;editorial que van fundar l\u2019any 1917. A m\u00e9s, inclou dues cartes de su\u00efcidi (cedides per la British Library i exhibides per primer cop al Regne Unit) i el bast\u00f3 trobat pel seu marit en un banc a la vora del riu Ouse el dia que va desapar\u00e8ixer. El seu cos va ser trobat un mes despr\u00e9s per nens que llan\u00e7aven pedres al que creien que era un tronc. <\/p>\n<p>Lligada a la vida pol\u00edtica, social i cultural brit\u00e0nica, Virginia Woolf ha estat admirada, imitada, criticada, analitzada, deconstru\u00efda, satiritzada. \u00c9s cert el que va dir: &#8220;Les paraules sobreviuen als canvis del temps gaireb\u00e9 millor que qualsevol altra mat\u00e8ria&#8221;. Va confrontar els clix\u00e9s victorians i va establir nous est\u00e0ndards de cr\u00edtica i escriptura creativa. Va anul\u00b7lar el seu <em>background<\/em> victori\u00e0 per instal\u00b7lar-se a la modernitat. Va ser immillorable dotant frases i par\u00e0grafs d&#8217;altres significats que distaven molt d&#8217;all\u00f2 que realment escrivia. Les seves paraules van aconseguir una doble dimensi\u00f3. I fins i tot una tercera (emocional). Virginia Woolf va comen\u00e7ar a escriure professionalment l\u2019any 1905. A les seves obres no hi ha trama ni acci\u00f3, nom\u00e9s consci\u00e8ncia. Una barreja de psicologia i emocions, passat, records. Els seus personatges reflexionen sobre la vida i el temps. La seva prosa l\u00edrica -carregada d&#8217;impressions auditives i visuals- es va allunyar de l&#8217;observaci\u00f3 descriptiva pr\u00f2pia del realisme, fins a arribar al virtuosisme estil\u00edstic i la grandesa narrativa. <\/p>\n<p>Va ser part d&#8217;una dinastia la riquesa de la qual es basava en coneixements i agilitat mental, m\u00e9s que en el patrimoni hereditari. Com a membre de l&#8217;aristocr\u00e0cia intel\u00b7lectual, a la seva llar familiar de Kensington hi gaudien de gran import\u00e0ncia el discurs, la xerrada, els llibres, les cartes, les idees, l&#8217;ambient emocional. La comunicaci\u00f3 era essencial. El seu pare -un eminent cr\u00edtic literari- llegia cada nit als seus fills durant una hora i mitja cl\u00e0ssics infantils o a Walter Scott. La inf\u00e0ncia \u00e9s el lloc en el qual habitem la resta de les nostres vides. La influ\u00e8ncia familiar i el ric ambient cultural que Virginia Woolf va viure al 26 de Hyde Park Gate va ser fonamental per al seu desenvolupament literari posterior. La influ\u00e8ncia de Londres \u00e9s innegable a la seva vida; tamb\u00e9 en la seva obra. Familiaritzada amb la m\u00fasica del carrer, el tr\u00e0nsit, les multituds, el riu, els captaires, les est\u00e0tues, monuments, music halls, editorials, teatres, galeries, sales de concerts&#8230; la ciutat li oferia experi\u00e8ncies sensorials i estimulaci\u00f3 intel\u00b7lectual. No van ser poques les mudances (Hyde Park Gate, Gordon Square, Rodmell, Tavistock Square&#8230;). <\/p>\n<p>El seu comprom\u00eds feminista i l&#8217;esperit pol\u00edtic i anti-militar van marcar els anys trenta. A trav\u00e9s de l&#8217;assaig <em>Una habitaci\u00f3 pr\u00f2pia<\/em> (1929) va reivindicar el paper de la dona escriptora. A <em>Entre actes<\/em> (1940), el seu \u00faltim llibre, va plasmar amb maduresa narrativa el preludi del desastre. L&#8217;inici de la Segona Guerra Mundial, la destrucci\u00f3 de la seva casa de Londres a causa d&#8217;un bombardeig, la por a la invasi\u00f3 de Hitler (Leonard Woolf era jueu), van conformar un nefast c\u00famul de coincid\u00e8ncies que van confluir en el deteriorament irreversible de la seva delicada salut mental. &#8220;I will continue, but can I?&#8221;. El 28 mar\u00e7 1941 va carregar les seves butxaques de pedres, es va ficar al riu i es va su\u00efcidar. Virginia Woolf va escriure nou novel\u00b7les, dues biografies, una obra de teatre i m\u00faltiples assajos, llibres de contes, cartes i diaris.
