I see a darkness<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Fa uns quants anys vaig pensar &#8211; i vaig redactar &#8211; una proposta expositiva que, sota el t\u00edtol de <em>Bufons i trobadors<\/em> abordava la condici\u00f3 narrativa de l&#8217;artista. La par\u00f2dia del buf\u00f3 i la seducci\u00f3 del trobador com a dues possibles maneres d&#8217;analitzar el paper de l&#8217;artista a l&#8217;actualitat. El vaig presentar a algunes convocat\u00f2ries per\u00f2, despr\u00e9s de diverses negatives, vaig decidir abandonar-lo. En tractar ara les connexions entre m\u00fasica folk i art contemporani no puc evitar caure de nou en la figura del bard. En la seva actitud, funci\u00f3, din\u00e0miques i ritmes hi ha alguna cosa que emocional i discursivament connecta amb l&#8217;artista. La seva narraci\u00f3 performativa, la transmissi\u00f3 oral de les seves hist\u00f2ries o els seus viatges de poble en poble cantant gestes s\u00f3n qualitats que permeten obrir certs vincles entre les dues posicions.<\/p>\n<p>Quan, a m\u00e9s, l&#8217;artista empatitza directament amb l&#8217;imaginari del m\u00fasic, o m\u00e9s aviat del cantautor, aquests nexes es multipliquen. D&#8217;aquesta manera, els atributs del folk (veu, can\u00e7\u00f3 i instrumentaci\u00f3 ac\u00fastica) s&#8217;erigeixen en fil conductor d&#8217;un relat que revisa el treball d&#8217;alguns artistes sensibles al g\u00e8nere. O de manera m\u00e9s directa: aquest text parla d&#8217;artistes visuals que, en sentit literal o figurat, canten i toquen la guitarra en un porxo, a un ritme lent, de vegades des de la llum, de vegades des de la foscor. Artistes visuals que ens ofereixen experi\u00e8ncies i sensacions derivades de l&#8217;esquema literari, sonor i ideol\u00f2gic de la can\u00e7\u00f3 folk.<\/p>\n<p>I ja que el concepte d&#8217;artista-bard m&#8217;ha fet retrocedir als temps de <em>Bufons i Trobadors<\/em>, inicio aquest breu recorregut amb una pe\u00e7a d&#8217;aquella \u00e8poca que compleix una doble funci\u00f3. D&#8217;una banda, recupera i tanca un projecte basat en la performativitat del relat; de l&#8217;altra, obre un assaig dedicat a una possible actitud &#8220;folkie&#8221; en art contemporani. L&#8217;actitud del bard.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignleft size-full wp-image-9093\" src=\"http:\/\/a-desk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/bedyrok.jpg\" alt=\"a) Bedwyr Williams. Bard Attitude. Impresi\u00c3\u00b3n fotogr\u00c3\u00a1fica. 99 x 88 cm. 2005\" align=\"left\" width=\"667\" height=\"449\" srcset=\"https:\/\/a-desk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/bedyrok.jpg 667w, https:\/\/a-desk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/bedyrok-595x400.jpg 595w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 667px) 100vw, 667px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Bard Attitude<\/em> (2005) \u00e9s una acci\u00f3 de l&#8217;artista gal\u00b7l\u00e8s Bedwyr Williams. Una lectura par\u00f2dica i exagerada de la representaci\u00f3 \u00e8pica del bard on la narraci\u00f3 oral, la performance, i la com\u00e8dia juguen un paper destacat. En ella, veiem l&#8217;artista disfressat de bard recitant i entonant la seva lira davant la naturalesa salvatge. Un gest heroic i volunt\u00e0riament ridiculitzat per Williams (barba postissa, lira gegant, sand\u00e0lies modernes) que versiona lliurement <em>The Bard<\/em> (1817), la m\u00edtica pintura de John Martin, un dels pintors m\u00e9s assenyalats del romanticisme brit\u00e0nic. Tot i que aqu\u00ed nom\u00e9s veiem el registre fotogr\u00e0fic, <em>Bard Attitude<\/em> consisteix en una performance on l&#8217;artista utilitza l&#8217;orat\u00f2ria i l&#8217;humor per exposar i reivindicar la seva pertinen\u00e7a gal\u00b7lesa en un context art\u00edstic &#8211; el brit\u00e0nic, l&#8217;internacional- marcat per un clar domini angl\u00e8s.<\/p>\n<p>D&#8217;altra banda, <em>Bard Attitude<\/em> sempre em remet a Bonnie Prince Billy (Will Oldham), un dels renovadors m\u00e9s significatius del folk americ\u00e0 a l&#8217;actualitat. I, curiosament, s\u00f3n diversos els artistes que conec interessats en el seu so, els seus relats o directament en la seva persona. Potser la seva sensibilitat i carisma, aix\u00ed com la seva posici\u00f3 aliena i contr\u00e0ria al <em>mainstream<\/em>, fa que sigui una figura atractiva per al context art\u00edstic proper a la m\u00fasica popular. De fet, almenys des del meu lectura subjectiva i limitada, part de les connexions entre art i folk de les que puc parlar passen gratament per Will Oldham.<\/p>\n<p>Per exemple, l&#8217;artista portugu\u00e8s Joao Onofre va presentar l\u2019any 2007 el v\u00eddeo <em>Untitled (I see a Darkness)<\/em>, una adaptaci\u00f3 de la can\u00e7\u00f3 <em>I see a Darkness<\/em> (1999) de Bonnie Prince Billy en qu\u00e8 dos nens d\u201911 i 12 anys canten i interpreten a guitarra i piano la versi\u00f3 que Jhonny Cash va signar l&#8217;any 2000. Com \u00e9s habitual en el treball d&#8217;Onofre, la seva posada en escena genera una tensi\u00f3 i una estranyesa dif\u00edcil de digerir. Dos nens somrients i amb ganes de fer-ho b\u00e9 canten una can\u00e7\u00f3 que simplement, per edat, per sentiments que desconeixen, no poden entendre.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignleft size-full wp-image-9094\" src=\"http:\/\/a-desk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/2-_joao_onofre.jpg\" alt=\"b) Joao Onofre Untitled (I see a Darkness). Video HD. 4:18 min. 2007\" align=\"left\" width=\"670\" height=\"377\" srcset=\"https:\/\/a-desk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/2-_joao_onofre.jpg 670w, https:\/\/a-desk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/2-_joao_onofre-595x335.jpg 595w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 670px) 100vw, 670px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Un any despr\u00e9s, Susan Phillipsz va presentar a la fundaci\u00f3 privada Jarla Partilager d&#8217;Estocolm una instal\u00b7laci\u00f3 sonora tamb\u00e9 anomenada <em>I see a Darkness<\/em>. <a href=\" https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Mj0xEefb0P4\">Una pe\u00e7a que embolcalla, de tot just set minuts<\/a> (altaveus i efectes de llum repartits per l&#8217;espai expositiu) on l&#8217;artista escocesa barrejava diferents registres sonors per oferir una experi\u00e8ncia sensorial i psicol\u00f2gica espec\u00edfica. En primer lloc, el registre de la seva veu &#8220;amateur&#8221; cantant a capella la can\u00e7\u00f3 de Bonnie Prince Billy; a continuaci\u00f3, una pe\u00e7a a piano de Maurice Ravel (<em>Pavana per a una infanta difunta<\/em>, 1899); i, finalment, una nova interpretaci\u00f3 de Phillipsz cantant una barcarola italiana del segle XIX dedicada a Santa Ll\u00facia. De nou la incursi\u00f3 emocional en Will Oldham com a exercici d&#8217;exploraci\u00f3 de sentiments extrems.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Mj0xEefb0P4\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignleft size-full wp-image-9095\" src=\"http:\/\/a-desk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/I_see_darkness.jpg\" alt=\"C) Susan Phillipsz. I See a Darkness. Instalaci\u00c3\u00b3n. 2008\" align=\"left\" width=\"670\" height=\"368\" srcset=\"https:\/\/a-desk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/I_see_darkness.jpg 670w, https:\/\/a-desk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/I_see_darkness-595x327.jpg 595w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 670px) 100vw, 670px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>L\u2019any 2008, Richard T. Walker, artista angl\u00e8s establert a San Francisco, va convidar a Will Oldham a participar en un dels seus projectes. Les peces de Richard T. Walker solen ser filmacions solit\u00e0ries en paratges colpidors i sublims (per exemple, deserts o muntanyes del territori nord-americ\u00e0) en qu\u00e8 l&#8217;artista recita i interpreta composicions musicals de folk experimental i intimista dirigits a la magnific\u00e8ncia de la natura. Una posada en crisi de la nostra percepci\u00f3 rom\u00e0ntica de l&#8217;entorn natural, que troba en la proximitat de la can\u00e7\u00f3 un possible m\u00e8tode per desdibuixar l&#8217;artifici cultural del paisatge. Malgrat la solemnitat del territori, les performances &#8220;land-art&#8221; de Walker deixen el paisatge en un segon pla, invertint aix\u00ed l&#8217;habitual relaci\u00f3 contemplativa de l&#8217;individu davant el seu entorn. <em>What am we \/ you \/ I waiting for?<\/em>, El projecte amb Oldham, els situa a tots dos al cim d&#8217;una muntanya per cantar junts a l&#8217;espera d&#8217;una experi\u00e8ncia sublim que mai arriba a produir-se. Filmat en diversos paisatges de Texas i Nou M\u00e8xic, <em>In the predicament of always (as it is)<\/em>, 2014 \u00e9s un dels seus \u00faltims projectes. En ell, l&#8217;artista innova amb dos nous elements: la seva progressiva desaparici\u00f3 de l&#8217;acci\u00f3 (cosa que sempre recorda als personatges contemplatius de Caspar David Friedrich) i la incorporaci\u00f3 f\u00edsica i sonora de la guitarra el\u00e8ctrica.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/108983193?color=ff9933&#038;title=0&#038;byline=0&#038;portrait=0\" width=\"670\" height=\"189\" frameborder=\"0\" webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>L\u2019any 2012, Ragnar Kjartansson va presentar <em>The Visitors<\/em>, una complexa videoinstal\u00b7laci\u00f3 amb nou projeccions sincronitzades que fragmenten una can\u00e7\u00f3 folk i l&#8217;expandeixen per les habitacions d&#8217;una vella mansi\u00f3 senyorial &#8211; la Rokery Farm &#8211; situada a l&#8217;estat de Nova York. L&#8217;artista island\u00e8s va comptar amb m\u00fasics i amics de Reykjav\u00edk, donant lloc a una experi\u00e8ncia col\u00b7lectiva i un sentiment de comunitat que hipnotitza l&#8217;espectador i el convida a moure\u2019s per l&#8217;espai expositiu seguint, en silenci, la pres\u00e8ncia aut\u00f2noma i diferenciada de cadascuna de les parts (veus, guitarres, violins, acordi\u00f3, piano. bateria&#8230;). Entre ells, tocant la guitarra dins d&#8217;una banyera, hi ha el mateix Kjartansson. Vaig poder veure la instal\u00b7laci\u00f3 l&#8217;any passat al Museu Guggenheim de Bilbao, i realment la sensaci\u00f3 que transmet la pe\u00e7a \u00e9s extraordin\u00e0ria, inusual, meravellosa. Una cosa semblant a l&#8217;experi\u00e8ncia &#8211; encara que aix\u00f2 no tingui a veure amb el folk, per\u00f2 s\u00ed amb la m\u00fasica &#8211; que em va produir fa anys el visionat de <em>Zidane, A 21st Century Portrait<\/em> (2006) de Douglas Gordon i Phillip Parreno amb la banda sonora de Mogwai. Una comuni\u00f3 perfecta entre imatge i so que fa que no vulguis sortir mai d&#8217;aqu\u00ed.
