{"id":32840,"date":"2021-07-05T06:00:48","date_gmt":"2021-07-05T05:00:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/a-desk.org\/?p=32840"},"modified":"2023-07-09T14:45:12","modified_gmt":"2023-07-09T12:45:12","slug":"tiny-splashes-splashes-against-the-wall-of-the-exhibition-space","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/a-desk.org\/en\/magazine\/tiny-splashes-splashes-against-the-wall-of-the-exhibition-space\/","title":{"rendered":"Tiny splashes, splashes against the wall of the exhibition space"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>This text starts with the humming of a melody*<\/em><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"vimeo-player\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/557088345\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>It all began with the simple observation: there are no doors in exhibition spaces.<br \/>\nI don&#8217;t mean another entrance door.<br \/>\nI also don&#8217;t mean a door to the office.<br \/>\nNot a door to the archive,<br \/>\nworkshop,<br \/>\nstorage,<br \/>\ncloset,<br \/>\nor toilet,<br \/>\nseparating modes of production \u2013 for better or worse.<br \/>\nThese doors have locks and authorities who hold their keys.<br \/>\nThese doors are one of two kinds of doors in an art space.<br \/>\nThey form an enclosure within the art space.<br \/>\nAnd this enclosure is the exhibition space.<\/p>\n<p>I might walk along the walls alongside these doors,<br \/>\nfollowing their architectural trail.<br \/>\nAnd as I walk, I measure the exhibition space.<br \/>\nAnd it is one space, where one room simply leads into the next room.<\/p>\n<p>In this movement in and around the exhibition I encounter the second kind of doors.<br \/>\nDoors that are absent.<br \/>\nRendered visible only in the arch,<br \/>\nthe partition wall that doesn&#8217;t cross the whole width of a space,<br \/>\nleaving a gap for me to pass.<br \/>\nThe absent door becomes visible with every turn of my body around a corner.<br \/>\nA turn an absent door does not disturb.<br \/>\nAbsent doors are doors withdrawn from my movement.<br \/>\nMy body floats, curves and turns, cruising with little architectural hold-ups and hiccups.<br \/>\nA sailing boat, from harbour to harbour, across water, shore to shore.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003300;\"><em>It has been raining again. My cheap raincoat, basically a piece of plastic, acts like a pressure cooker. My skin sticking to my shirt that is soaked in sweat. A small creek of salty fluids is finding its way through the mountain range that is my spine.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003300;\"><em>My pulse slightly heightened from the bike ride. 45 min, all across town. But it is OK \u2013 putting some music on, I am still able to do it. It comes with just a small exhaustion. \u201cA good everyday-work out\u201d &#8211; they say. 45 min, all across town. From one edge of affordability to the other. The frontier is growing. Growing, roughly speaking, in a circular shape. Like when you drop a coin in still waters. The tiny waves pushing outwards. Pushing and pushing.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003300;\"><em>As I bend down to lock my bike, I notice, on the inside of my legs, at the bottom of my trousers where they meet my sneakers, a small patch of skin becomes visible as I lift my foot to wipe off wet dirt, that splashed on my legs while biking through the rain. It&#8217;s been more of a drizzle really.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003300;\"><em>I approach the building. I push open the door.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"vimeo-player\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/558587739\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The sound of the waves touches my eardrums.<br \/>\nWaves, in the wake of my sailing movement sent towards the shore.<br \/>\nTiny splashes, splashes against the walls of the exhibition space.<br \/>\nAgainst the inside of my skin,<br \/>\nmy liver and lungs.<br \/>\nMy eyes, lips and the tip of my tongue.<br \/>\nMy legs, my arms, my spine.<br \/>\nMy head, my heart.<br \/>\nAnd as my body floats through the open space,<br \/>\nI wonder: where does this movement come from?<\/p>\n<p>Obviously, let&#8217;s face it, there is nothing natural about it.<br \/>\nThe path through and out and in the open,<br \/>\nacquired by means,<br \/>\ninherited by custom and good fortune,<br \/>\nlearned by heart,<br \/>\npractised,<br \/>\nuntil blind to the water,<br \/>\nuntil seamless and well oiled.<br \/>\nThe eyes on the horizon: always, necessarily, improving.<\/p>\n<p>This our movement \u2013 as modernistic and mystical as the architecture that facilitates it.<br \/>\nA freedom of movement that is universal only in terms of its territory, as every inch should be accessible.<br \/>\nBut not universal regarding its subjects:<br \/>\nwho is enabled to float?<br \/>\nAnd who is forced to?<br \/>\nAnd who cannot, is not allowed?<\/p>\n<p>With a needle pinned to North, and a needle pinned to expansion,<br \/>\nobscured in a union called culture and progress.<br \/>\nThe open exhibition space: an abstraction.<br \/>\nA flexible backdrop, and thus a somewhat generous organization of space<br \/>\nthat can host all sorts of things, assumingly equal,<br \/>\ncarrying the promise of (physical) neutrality:<br \/>\nproviding the same conditions for everything and everyone, a level plane<br \/>\n&#8211; while that promise is accumulative in itself.<\/p>\n<p>But let&#8217;s not get in over our heads, carried away by a stream of thought.<br \/>\nI fetch a door handle to pause<br \/>\nin this unfolding of a movement of thoughts.<br \/>\nCatching my breath.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/a-desk.org\/en\/magazine\/tiny-splashes-splashes-against-the-wall-of-the-exhibition-space\/stephans-drawing-2-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-32851\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"2362\" height=\"1703\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-32851\" src=\"http:\/\/a-desk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Stephans-drawing-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/a-desk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Stephans-drawing-1.jpg 2362w, https:\/\/a-desk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Stephans-drawing-1-555x400.jpg 555w, https:\/\/a-desk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Stephans-drawing-1-768x554.jpg 768w, https:\/\/a-desk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Stephans-drawing-1-1536x1107.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/a-desk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Stephans-drawing-1-2048x1477.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2362px) 100vw, 2362px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I push the door handle down, pulling the door to open.<br \/>\n\u201cOh, hi.\u201d<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #003300;\"><em>\u201cHi.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/em><\/span>I take a step backwards to the side holding the door open, letting him pass.<\/p>\n<p>I like his shoes, I think to myself.<br \/>\nA somewhat squished leaf, or maybe it&#8217;s two, entangled, pressed together, is stuck to the sole on the right inside of his left shoe. Probably dragged in from the muddy wet outside.<br \/>\nWhen he has passed I turn, watch him continue on his path. He is on a fast pace, and I fantasize treading after him, hastily catching his rhythm putting the tip of my shoe on the leaf. And as his shoe lifts off the ground again the leaf peels off his sole.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003300;\"><em>I got to go. I am running late.<br \/>\n<\/em><em>It&#8217;s my nephew&#8217;s birthday today.<br \/>\n<\/em><em>He&#8217;s not really my nephew, but the son of a close friend. Either way.<br \/>\n<\/em><em>He turned 7. I promised we will make him a hat out of carrots.<br \/>\n<\/em><em>And I got him one of these disposable cameras as a gift.<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Last year, before they moved out of town because of the rising rents, we made pancakes together for everyone. We made them look like pirate faces. Sliced strawberries as a bandanna, the blindfolds with chocolate sauce, and the earrings we drew with maple syrup.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003300;\"><em>The kitchen was a mess we had to clean, but he was so proud of the pirate pan cakes.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 42px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=4286691592\/size=small\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/track=2287055610\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ventil-records.bandcamp.com\/album\/hmm-1-or-2-or-so-metres-inside\">Hmm&#8230; 1, or 2 or so metres. Inside. by Stephan Blumenschein<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>What are the odds of running into someone at a door?<br \/>\nBut then again, don&#8217;t we run into each other by a door most of the times?<br \/>\nWhen distinct movements of bodies meet, wait and hesitate, temporarily appear together,<br \/>\nfor an undefined reason, nothing guaranteed neither necessary.<br \/>\nFor no other reason then the architectural setting.<br \/>\nOther than passing by, a door \u2013 the smallest, tiniest of encounter.<br \/>\nI enter, the door swings shut behind me.<\/p>\n<p>The door is slowing me down, might even get me into a hold.<br \/>\nAsking me to stay just a second longer, maybe longer than is right.<br \/>\nWhile, but also, nevertheless calling me.<\/p>\n<p>A scent of staggering, then accelerating.<br \/>\nNotwithstanding its call, I step into, enter the adjoining space \u2013 like turning the page in a book.<br \/>\nFor a second I look away.<br \/>\nAs doors open and close.<\/p>\n<p>As doors open and close,<br \/>\nattuning my rhythm to the rhythm of the architecture,<br \/>\nthe pace of my steps, becomes the pace of my thoughts.<br \/>\nLike conjunctions in a text, doors bring thoughts together.<br \/>\nBringing about relations wrapped in a rhythm<br \/>\nthat unfolds as I move through them, with them, always more than what is seen.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/a-desk.org\/en\/magazine\/tiny-splashes-splashes-against-the-wall-of-the-exhibition-space\/postercollage-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-32967\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"681\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-32967\" src=\"http:\/\/a-desk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/posterCollage-scaled.jpeg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/a-desk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/posterCollage-scaled.jpeg 2560w, https:\/\/a-desk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/posterCollage-595x158.jpeg 595w, https:\/\/a-desk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/posterCollage-768x204.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/a-desk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/posterCollage-1536x409.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/a-desk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/posterCollage-2048x545.jpeg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>* <em>Soon All Cities <\/em>by The Ex<\/p>\n<p>This text was originally written as a score for a performance as part of the exhibition \u201cUpon arrival and during our stay; leaving, leaving, and leaving again.\u201d at P\/\/\/\/AKT, Amsterdam in September 2020. After having walked through the exhibition space, the office and down a small hallway past a storage, the viewer would end up in a small atelier space at the backside of the building. From there, every 25min a boat departed, taking a small group of visitors onto the canal.
