The film is the result of a long-term collaboration titled\u00a0<em>Nothing About Us Without Us<\/em>, inspired by feminist film practitioners who emphasise the importance of making films with their subjects, not about them. Through an ongoing process oflistening and sharing ideas, Petra and SCOT-PEP were guided by the questions: how do you\u00a0act politically when stigma prevents you from being public? How can you create new images\u00a0of sex workers without revealing the identity of those involved? What is regarded as work\u00a0and who has the right to work? How has (women\u2019s) work been represented historically and\u00a0what new strategies can be used for filmmaking today?<\/p>\n<p>Two historic films are used a starting point for the new film work:\u00a0<em>Les Prostitu\u00e9es de Lyon Parlent<\/em>\u00a0(1975) that documents the occupation of a church by two hundred sex workers\u00a0denouncing police harassment and dangerous working conditions; and Chantal Akerman\u2019s\u00a0iconic\u00a0<em>Jeanne Dielman,\u00a023 Quai du Commerce, 1080 Brussels\u00a0<\/em>(1975), which depicts the daily\u00a0routine of Jeanne as a mother, housewife and sex worker.<\/p>\n<p>The film was first screened in Edinburgh in 2018 and exhibited in early\u00a02019 at Collective, Edinburgh, and Edith-Russ-Haus for Media Arts, Oldenburg.<\/p>\n<p>The wider project includes a digitally printed banner by SCOT-PEP and artist Fiona\u00a0Jardine; a folio of research designed by Maeve Redmond that was collated during the\u00a0development of the project and compiles articles, books, film titles, online news, essays,\u00a0reports and briefing papers shared between Petra Bauer, producer and researcher Frances\u00a0Stacey, and SCOT-PEP members; and an archive of audio recordings that centre the voices\u00a0of SCOT-PEP members as they expand on discussions that take place in the film, exploring\u00a0topics such as representation and stigma.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>This film is part of the \u201cCollaborative Film\u00a0Making\u201d month.
