Spring is an awakening that brings out what was latent. Sprouts, like sudden manifestations, like an apparition of internal and invisible life, make us think of speech, of orality, of a mouth that opens to say something. Also, it makes us think of memories that suddenly manifest themselves, that assail us without invoking them, awakened from the lethargy of memory by some form of sensory stimulation; a smell, a place, a certain color, or a song.<\/p>\n

In the Branch, Root, Sprout, Stem<\/a><\/em> course, developed at the La Capella Art Center within the framework of Schools of Context<\/a>, spring inspired us to take Sprouts as an articulating element of the season, and to work from the voice, the oral record and the spoken text. Merc\u00e8 Soler<\/a> was a guest artist, and her work brought us closer to the ephemeral materiality of memories, desires, secrets and confessions. We conducted two writing and speaking exercises taking two of her works as reference: an orchard and the fox<\/a><\/em>, and pantone<\/a><\/em>. From the first we took the glossary, a set of words with which Sol\u00e9 associates the description of a memory. The students who participated chose some of these words (and in some cases added their own) and wrote a short text about them, like a dictionary entry but more poetic and personal. From the second exercise, pantones, we extracted the idea of associating a color with one or more memories, and we presented them orally, as recordings of sounds.<\/p>\n
