A*DESK has been offering since 2002 contents about criticism and contemporary art. A*DESK has become consolidated thanks to all those who have believed in the project, all those who have followed us, debating, participating and collaborating. Many people have collaborated with A*DESK, and continue to do so. Their efforts, knowledge and belief in the project are what make it grow internationally. At A*DESK we have also generated work for over one hundred professionals in culture, from small collaborations with reviews and classes, to more prolonged and intense collaborations.
At A*DESK we believe in the need for free and universal access to culture and knowledge. We want to carry on being independent, remaining open to more ideas and opinions. Alexandra Pirici presents a new large site-specific installation with live action (performance + music + singing) at the Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin. With her expansive new work “Attune (Tuning)”, Alexandra Pirici explores the ways in which human beings resemble, influence and tune each other to give rise to complex structures, be they chemical, physical, mineral or social.
Pirici has created an imaginary landscape in the historic lobby of the Hamburger Bahnhof and interweaves active sculptural elements with live actions and musical pieces of his own choreography and composition. In this simultaneously archaic and futuristic environment, chemical reactions, mineral formations and physical phenomena act alongside living bodies in recognition and celebration of the ongoing process of attunement of living and non-living matter.
The exhibition explores how self-organization works, something the artists featured in the video attempt to depict. There are numerous self-organizing systems in our environment that generate their own stable, fully tuned structures. Shoals of fish are an example of this, as are formations of birds in the sky or dunes. Likewise, there are patterns that form as a result of chemical reactions. Visual artist Alexandra Pirici is interested in these processes without apparent guides.
Born in Bucharest and a trained dancer, Pirici introduces artists into her works; movement and the body serve her to make what has been fixed flow again, be it history, knowledge or memories. For Pirici, everything material is made of the same stuff: the human being, the stone, the crystalline formation, the grain of sand. “We are just different constellations of materials,” she explains.
Alexandra Pirici (1982) is an artist with a background in choreography whose artworks have been exhibited at the Venice Biennale (at the 59th edition in the Central Pavilion in 2022 and at the 55th edition in 2013 in the Romanian Pavilion), at the New Museum in New York (2018), at Skulptur Projekte Münster (2017), at Tate Modern London and Tate Liverpool (2016), at Manifesta 10 St. Petersburg (2014) or at the Centre Pompidou Paris (2014). This commission allows the artist to develop her practice on a larger scale and incorporate both fixed physical structures and live action.
