Artists for a while now have been able to work with an infinite variety of materials, ideas and methodologies. In the art world we are used to art practices that micmic and infiltrate all spheres of life (public and private). But sometimes it is healthy to take a step back and see what happens when things are exaggerated, just a little. The episode Art Project from Portlandia does just that.
Portlandia is a television series on the Independent Film Channel, that was released in January 2011. The series is set in Portland (Oregon) a setting that in principle is irrelevant that over time, with the sketches, becomes more and more loaded with content.
In the episode Art Project, conceptual art and Portland are looked upon through a distorting mirror, where the image, however much it is exaggerated still remains faithful to reality. Where the humour doesn’t hide its sharp criticism.
